Magnus wakes up, normal again except for how he's in an unfamiliar room. Not Galahad's old room, either. A nondescript one that, as far as he can tell, just has a bunch of clothes and stuff. Also he's wearing silky pajamas he'd never pick out automatically on his own?

It doesn't take long for him to feel like the walls are closing in on him. It's out of respect for Aornis that he stumbles out of her room through the door (barefoot and in the silky pajamas) and goes outside the normal way. Once outside, he flops into the snow, calling summer and feeling the way the snow steams against his skin as it melts.

He's not feeling totally regular again when he sits bolt upright, remembering that Drosera is probably in Galahad's old room with two people that aren't Magnus or Galahad. Existential crisis over, there's a child to retrieve! And hopefully, he'll run into Galahad in the halls.

In spite of himself he laughs. "What?"

"I think I should cut off my toe and see if I can reattach it," Magnus says. He's actually been thinking about this a lot over the past week or so. "Just in case Tally gets, like, impatient or whatever."

Over time, Galahad has developed an opinion of Magnus as a reasonable person who makes thoughtful decisions and stands by his positions. It's because of this that he takes in Magnus' words, considers them, and then says, "All right." (It's an experiment, which he respects, and obviously Magnus wouldn't do it on anyone else. Magnus is the most likely person to be able to heal himself afterwards. Also, girl code? Claudius said something once about girl code and referred to Magnus when he did.)

Oh, good. If Galahad doesn't think it's a bad idea, it's probably fine. "If it doesn't work, toes are probably the most unimportant body part," Magnus explains. "And obviously I can't try it on anyone else. That would be so messed up." He stands, then, because Dro's breakfast is more pressing. As he does, something else occurs to him. "Can we try sleeping here again tonight? I'd like to be able to, like, handle it if something like yesterday happens again."

"I told Claudius I would be away for a week."

Oh. Warmth floods Magnus, and he gives Galahad a little smile. "Okay, awesome."

"If you need me longer, it can be longer." He scratches between Dro's wings.

"You're the best."

[onthewillowsthere]

He smiles up, but doesn't say anything; Magnus knows everything he has to say.

Magnus smiles back for a moment, then nods. "Breakfast for hungry babies? And mamas? Wait, it's Lent, isn't it? Does that affect breakfast for you?"

"I can't eat until after sunset."

[summerdude]

"Oh, so like Ramadan," Magnus nods. "Okay, hungry baby breakfast, then?"

"Hungry baby breakfast," serenely.

After Drosera is fed and soothed and Magnus has washed the raw meat juices from his hands, he turns to Galahad. "Clothes first?" he asks. "Or toe?"

Galahad shoots him another little smile. "Clothes first. If you can't heal it you'll bleed a lot."

"Cool." Drosera is starting to get to big to ride on Magnus's shoulder all the time, but he sweeps her up and perches her there anyway, feeling weirdly grateful to have his strength back. She immediately tucks her beak into his ponytail, and he huffs a laugh. "Back to the room, then?"

He nods, and reaches for Magnus' hand for the walk back.

Magnus threads their fingers together, and takes a deep breath. "It feels good to be me again," he says, quietly.

He squeezes Magnus' hand. "I'm glad you're back."

[summerdude]

Magnus shoots him a bit of summer in emphasis. "Being cold sucks," he says, half-joking. "I don't know how you bear it."

A little shrug. "It was warmer in Tress' body. I think mine gets more cold."

Magnus thinks about this for a moment. "Bodies are weird," he decides.

[onthewillowsthere]

"They are," he agrees, without hesitation.

[summerdude]

"0/10, do not recommend, would not buy again," Magnus jokes.

[onthewillowsthere]

"Let the buyer beware." What he actually says is caveat emptor, but. Translation.
