Magnus needs something to change, so when a Mansion calendar helpfully informs him that it's International Falafel Day back on Earth, he goes to the library for some cookbooks, and then to the kitchen.

He lays out ten different falafel recipes. He gathers the ingredients they list, as best as he can understand them. He has canned chickpeas and fresh chickpeas and dried chickpeas and chickpea flour and box mixes of falafel that say 'just add water!'

Cripes.

"I can do this," he says, peering at the assorted recipes intently for a good ten minutes, and then takes the dried chickpeas over to the sink to rinse and soak.

As we all know, Dionysus is very good at everything and never does anything wrong, ever. So when he sees Magnus cooking something he is incredibly curious.

“Need help?”

[summerdude]

Magnus looks up from the sink, where his hands are submerged in an enormous thing of chickpeas and water. "Hey," he says. "What do you know about soaking stuff?"

[vineleaves]

"What are you --" but then before he can finish the sentence he just looks, with his own eyes. "Ooh, what're you making with 'em?"

[summerdude]

"Falafel! Best food in the universe."

[vineleaves]

"Oh! Wonderful! I've made falafel a lot, you know." Incorrect. He has eaten falafel a lot. The last time he actually cooked falafel from complete scratch was at least 238 years ago. "I think those have to soak overnight though."

[summerdude]

Magnus groans. "Of course they do," he says.

[vineleaves]

"Do you have a plan b? Or are you going to wait it out?"

[summerdude]

"I mean, I'm a busy guy. So I guess I'll make a different version while I wait for 'em to soak."

[vineleaves]

“Can we just use the ones in the cans? Canned chickpeas are wet.”

[summerdude]

"This recipe says it'll have the wrong texture."

[vineleaves]

“I think the other option is no falafel at all. How much of a difference could it make, realistically?” You’d think two half gods of plant life could figure out how to cook some chickpeas.

[summerdude]

"Great point, dude," Magnus says. "I'm not really what you'd call Kitchen Guy," he adds, going to hunt for a can opener.

[vineleaves]

"I'm definitely more of a Go To A Restaurant Guy but I can cook some." He made pancakes the other day, for example.

[summerdude]

"I never really had the opportunity to learn until here," Magnus says. If he can't find a can opener, he can probably just use Jack, right?

[vineleaves]

"Best way to learn is to just go for it, I suppose. What are you looking for?"

[summerdude]

"Sunny's asleep, so I need a different can opener."

[vineleaves]

"...You were going to use her as a can opener?" Look, Dionysus has spent a decent amount of time around Sunny by now -- he's one of the only people in this entire building who has ever raised a child before, for starters. He's aware she is... definitely not a small goddess of Biting Things, but at the same time she's not not that. But it still seems unnecessarily dangerous to have her biting down on metal like that.

"I think it's probably safer than the beak stone, so, like, why not?"

[vineleaves]

"Maybe don't give either of those things to her?"

[summerdude]

"She knows what she can handle, though," Magnus points out -- quite reasonably, he thinks.

[vineleaves]

"She's a baby." ????????????????????????

[summerdude]

"Yeah, but she'd bite things for her brother and sister, too? I haven't given her anything riskier than she's already had."

[vineleaves]

"What do you mean her--" Wait wait wait, time out. "You can talk with babies?"

[summerdude]

"You can't?"

[vineleaves]

"She's not speaking an actual language, so no, I can't." Dionysus is, however, now wondering why Apollo, the god of protecting children, can't understand Sunny, if Magnus can. Were babies one of the things he rattled off about his father when they were in that closet?

"Is -- is she okay? I've not known what to think about her being here. Grantaire suggested she might be here as a rescue attempt by the mansion spirits. You said -- she's got a brother and a sister?"
