Magnus needs something to change, so when a Mansion calendar helpfully informs him that it's International Falafel Day back on Earth, he goes to the library for some cookbooks, and then to the kitchen.

He lays out ten different falafel recipes. He gathers the ingredients they list, as best as he can understand them. He has canned chickpeas and fresh chickpeas and dried chickpeas and chickpea flour and box mixes of falafel that say 'just add water!'

Cripes.

"I can do this," he says, peering at the assorted recipes intently for a good ten minutes, and then takes the dried chickpeas over to the sink to rinse and soak.

“Oh. That sounds good.” Spiced and fried, you can’t really go wrong there. “Would you like help?” Judging from his face, he is not entirely confident about anything in the kitchen, really; but he will try.

[summerdude]

"Yeah, totally," Magnus says, immediately. "I think these have to soak for, like, twenty minutes or something but we can get the other stuff prepped in the meantime." He glances over the recipe. "We need to chop onion and garlic. Do you, um. Know how to cut things?"

"Not well, but I will try. Unless thy meaning is with cutting words." This falafel is about to have some huge chunks of onion and garlic in it.

[summerdude]

"Oh my gods, please try to lecture the onion into cutting itself," says Magnus immediately.

[bymyheelies]

He laughs delightedly. "This place is strange indeed, but I do not think it has enough magic to force an onion to become animate."

[summerdude]

"I mean," Magnus says, half-laughing. "We don't know unless we try? I bet flyting onions is totally doable."

[bymyheelies]

"Oh, ay, swearing at them is well and good, any cook could tell you that." He wheels over to the counter Magnus is at, eyeing the cutting board and assorted vegetables with some interest.

[summerdude]

"If you want to try cutting, go ahead," Magnus laughs. "I'm gonna try and get these chickpeas softer."

[bymyheelies]

"I shall, but I do not know how well I will do." He does, then, pick up the knife and whatever vegetables Magnus has already gotten out. He is clearly inexperienced at cutting things in a proper way, but maybe he can make up for that with the creative curses he is telling the onions.

[summerdude]

"It's fine," Magnus says, submerging his hands in the bowl of soaking chickpeas. "It's all gonna be thrown into a food processor eventually anyway." The chickpeas still feel kind of hard. He calls up some warmth to try and nudge them along.

"Oh! Well, I suppose it is no matter then, whether I do well or ill." There is a pause, and he continues chopping. "Thou art the rankest compound of villainous smell that ever offended nostril," he tells the onions cheerfully.

[summerdude]

Magnus snorts loudly. "That's a good one," he says. He's got summer at his fingertips now; he nudges it carefully into the chickpeas.

[bymyheelies]

"'Tis quite true, as well." He continues chopping the onions, then -- it is somewhat miraculous, in fact, that he hasn't chopped any appendages off yet. "How go the -- ah, chickpeas?"

[summerdude]

"They're, um, going," says Magnus, which is when he feels something twine around his fingers. He looks down. "Oh. Uh."

The chickpeas have all sprouted, tendrils winding up his hands, already putting out little green leaves. "Ummmmmmmm..."

Mercutio sets down his knife and laughs, shaking his head. "What?" he says in tones of great delight. "Shalt grow new cecio for us without even having the chance to use it?"

[summerdude]

"I didn't mean to!!!" Magnus says, laughing, trying to shake them off his hands. "Maybe we can still totally probably use them like this maybe?"

"Not unless thou wouldst have leaves in thy falafel." He grins. "Does it come with leaves?"

[summerdude]

"Um, half the recipe is leaves," Magnus points out. Fresh herbs! Central to the falafel experience.

[bymyheelies]

"True enough! But not the cecio." He glances around the room. "Might the fresh ones work better?"

[summerdude]

"I kinda wanna try this first."

[bymyheelies]

"Very well, thou'rt undoubtedly better at this than I."

[summerdude]

That is a lot of faith in a guy who has almost never made anything on his own before! "Cool," says Magnus, piling the sprouted chickpeas into the food processor.

To be fair, neither has Mercutio! He's just assuming Magnus knows more of what he's doing than he does. He is entirely distracted from his chopping now, watching Magnus with the food processor curiously.

[summerdude]

Magnus starts piling in more stuff: all the seasonings in the recipe, carefully double-checked. Then he gestures for Mercutio to add in the stuff he's been chopping.

Mercutio does so, then, and settles back to see what mysteries this machine with the blades will bring them. Hopefully it will be something halfway edible when it's done.
